Our first game was against Hucknall. We fought hard but so did Hucknall and at half time we were 6-8 down. It required a serious team talk from Nora to rally the troops and boost morale, getting us fired up and hungry for the win. With a hat trick from Laura Hues and plentiful goals from Nora Benko, including the winner in the last minute, the Rockhoppers secured victory, 13-12. The pressure was really on for our second game against Invicta. If we lost then Poly would claim the trophy because they had beaten Hucknall. Excellent defending, including saves from Michaela, meant that Invicta did not score until the third quarter. In a strong team effort with some lovely on-on-ones by Fee Greer and Vicky Miller we secured a comfortable win 8-4 took the Championship 3 title. A fantastic end to a fantastic season for the 3rds. Top row (L-R): Fiona Tranter, Emma Stapleton, Rhia Haycock, Laura Hues, Vicky Miller, Julia Hornig, Michaela Capkova Bottom row (L-R): Fiona Greer, Nora Benko Jan 30, 2012, 6:57 pm

Last weekend (21/22 January) Penguin men's and women's first teams both played at Manchester in matches televised by Sky Sports. For the men it was the finale of the League and we were always going to find it tough after three months without regular training sessions at Shell. We went down 6-14 to Portabello and faced an even more crushing defeat 7-22 to Lancaster, not helped by the dismissal of Attila Banhidy early on for misconduct. But our successes earlier in the season gave us third place in the League and we can look ahead to the British Championships on the weekend of 4/5 February. It was the penultimate weekend of the women's competition and, like the men, the reduced water time for training hadn't been the best preparation for Penguin Emperors. In our first game we were just edged out by Otter, 8-7, in an exciting London derby. Otter raced into a 4-0 lead in the first quarter but we fought back and gradually recovered to level at 5-5 in the third before losing out in the final stages. Our second game was also close-run with Manchester taking the win 2-4. Going into the final weekend at Cardiff on 10/11 February we are currently in fourth overall and well positioned for a place in the British Championships in March. Sky Sports will be screening highlights from the Manchester games in a one hour “Match of the Day”-style programme on five occasions. Provisional dates: Nov 22, 2011, 10:07 pm

Penguin men travelled to Lancaster for their first Super 5s weekend (12/13 November). First match against Manchester saw us beaten convincingly, 14-6. Next up was Cheltenham who had stormed through the divisional phase undefeated, so this promised to be a tough game. However, inspired by seven-goal Attila Banhidy and Gergo Szabo, who scored five, we somehow managed to hang on for victory 16-14, despite conceding 18 majors and having to play a man down for four minutes in the final period following a brutality offence.
